William Godley

I represent William Godley. I was a resident of West Florida during the British period. I was a merchant and apparently involved in several business ventures with George Raincock. The second governor of the province, John Eliot, appointed me to his Council in 1769 (I would resign in protest of acting Governor Montfort Browne‘s administration in 1770). In 1771, I and George Raincock were paid to ferry Creek delegates across Pensacola Bay for the “Indian congress.” In July 1772, I petitioned for 250 acres on the Mississippi River, opposite Three Islands, stating it would be myself and three enslaved people settling there.
