I represent Sylvia. I was a woman of color enslaved by Richard Ellis, a plantation owner on the Mississippi who, in his 1776 petition for a large grant of land, claimed to have had a wife, seven children, and 81 enslaved people in his household. By instrument dated October 10, 1775, he used me as collateral on a loan from the firm of McGillivray, Struthers, Swanson, Mackintosh & Co.
