Enslaved

Europeans on the Gulf Coast brought enslaved people from the Caribbean, from other British colonies, and directly from Africa. The British had very strict laws concerning the management of enslaved people and those included very few routes to manumission. While some enslaved people were trained artisans, many worked on British plantations – which were not necessarily devoted to agriculture; there was also industry like sawmills and brickyards.
