Rebecca Shockledge

I represent Rebecca Shockledge. As “Mrs. Shocklidge,” I was among the women enumerated in the Return of Women & Children of the 31st Regiment, Capt. Hamilton‘s Company, in Sept 1768. It was the practice of the British Army to allow their soldiers to bring wives and children to overseas assignments, usually because we had no other way to support ourselves than to accompany them. My husband was William Shockledge. He was discharged in 1797 after 30 years’ service in the 31st under General Oughton. Two children were enumerated with me in the return, but not named. Further genealogical research reveals I died in Chester, Cheshire, England in 1811 at the age of 72.
