Petit Jean

I represent Petit Jean. I was the Commander of the black Company of Petit Jean – Compañia de Negros de la Mobila. Our company was organized by Gen. Bernardo de Gálvez when he got to Mobile. While we were a small company, we are mentioned frequently in the records of this time. I was a mulatto man formerly enslaved by Louis Lusser of Mobile. I was married; my wife lived in town. I had been a cattle drover, and I would have driven Monsieur Lusser’s cattle to Mobile or Pensacola to market. I knew the terrain well and had contact with the local indigenous peoples. I probably carried a gun, which was forbidden to most enslaved people.  General Gálvez quickly found my expertise useful. In 1782, my wife and I purchased our freedom.
