I represent Mrs. Ross. I was among the women enumerated (without a first name) in the Return of Women & Children, 31st Regiment of Foot, Capt. Varlo‘s Company, September 1768. It was the practice of the British Army to allow their soldiers to bring wives and children to overseas assignments, usually because we had no other way to support ourselves than to accompany them. My husband was not named in the Return, but according to the August 1768 muster roll for the 31st, it was Corporal Alexander Ross. One child was enumerated with me, though it was not named.
