I represent Thomas Varlo. I was a captain and company commander with His Majesty’s 31st Regiment of Foot. The 31st was an infantry regiment that joined the garrison at Pensacola in 1765 and stayed – with a brief transfer to St. Augustine in 1769 – until 1772. I was commissioned captain in August 1761. With Captain Elias Durnford, I was appointed by the first provincial General Assembly as a commissioner in charge of building a Market House in Pensacola, Regulating Markets, and building funds to establish both a ferry on the Perdido River and a road from Mobile to Pensacola. These were all high priorities to make communications and travel in the province faster and safer.
