I represent Marianne, an enslaved woman of mixed race. I was born into slavery – records differ as to when, but around 1743. I became the mistress of my enslaver, Pierre Rochon Sr. after the death of his first wife in 1758. The Rochons were an old, wealthy family who were planters, shipbuilders, and carpenters, and owned real estate in Pensacola. We had six children together: Charles, Charlotte, Claudine, Alexis, Isabel, and Marie Louise (called “Rose” or “Rosette”). In March 1770, he manumitted our children, but I was not to gain my freedom until his death. It was 1771, when I was about 54 years old that he died and my manumission was complete.
