Joseph

I represent Joseph. I was an infant of color, the son of Perrine, and we were enslaved by René Roi. On Novemer 3, 1771, René gifted me to freedwoman Charlotte. Roi served as an interpreter for Choctaw and Creek languages for the “Indian congress” in Mobile in the early years of British West Florida.  There does not appear to be a record of why this gift was made; one hopes the reason was better than callous disregard for family ties.
