I represent Chester. I was a man of color enslaved by Governor Peter Chester of West Florida. I lived on Governor Chester’s plantation on the Mississippi River. When James Willing’s American raiders came through, plundering all the British plantations in the area, I was sent to New Orleans with the rest of the Governor’s slaves. The Governor sent his overseer to recover us all, but I had apparently already been put aboard a ship. I was listed on Peter Chester’s later claim to the Crown for losses in West Florida: “Negroe named Chester who went on board the ship Rebecca in the River Mississippi and was not delivered up [by] the Spanish Gov’r alledging he had no power over anything afloat.”
