Capt. Edward Crofton

I represent Edward Crofton. I was a captain in His Majesty’s 31st Regiment of Foot, so I would have arrived at the garrison in 1765. It was a challenging time for troops and their families coming to Pensacola, as a yellow fever epidemic raged that year. A “Mrs. Crofton” and “Child of Captain Crofton” were both listed in a return of women and children of the 31st that died between 1765 and 1767, presumably they were my wife and child. At that time I held the rank of Captain-Lieutenant, which was between a lieutenant and a captain, and indicated an officer who managed the company of a senior officer (like the colonel) who had other regimental duties to attend to. I sat in the Upper House for the 4th provincial General Assembly in the summer of 1769. I was commissioned a captain in November 1769.
