Lt. Noel Manuel Carriere

I represent Noel Manuel Carriere. I served as a lieutenant in the Louisiana black militias under Gen. Bernardo de Gálvez in his Gulf Coast operations: on the Mississippi and at Mobile and Pensacola. I received a medal of honor and a 300-peso bonus for “valiant conduct” at Mobile and Pensacola. I went on to command the battalion of free morenos. (Moreno is a Spanish term for a person of mixed race). New Orleans diocesan records show that I was the son of Joseph Carriere and Maria Therese (no surname given), and that I married Mariana Pierre Thomas in November 1778. At least two of my compatriots – Francisco Dorville and Phelipe Narbone, were witnesses. Our children were Manuel, born in 1780, Juan Bautista born 1786, Maria Vitoria born 1788, and Mariana born 1790.
