Lt. Francisco Dorville

I represent Francisco Dorville. I served under Gen. Bernardo de Gálvez as a lieutenant in the free pardo company of New Orleans, one of many free black militia companies out of New Orleans. I served Gálvez on the Mississippi River, Mobile, and Pensacola. I was identified as mulatto, or “pardo,” as the Spanish called me. I received a medal of honor and a 300 peso bonus for valiant conduct. I became a captain in a different company, and by the end of the Spanish period I had become commander of the Battalion of Free Pardos of New Orleans.
