I represent Thom. I was a man of color enslaved by Nehemiah Carter, a settler from New Jersey who came to West Florida in 1773. In his 1778 petition for a land grant on Boyd’s Creek, in the west part of the colony, he had a wife and eleven children, two of which had been born in West Florida. On March 3, 1779, he sold me to Joshua Howard, another plantation owner how had come to the colony in 1770.
