Perrine

I represent Perrine. I was a woman of color, the mother of Joseph, and we were enslaved by René Roi. On Novemer 3, 1771, René gifted my son to freedwoman Charlotte. Roi served as an interpreter for Choctaw and Creek languages for the “Indian congress” in Mobile in the early years of British West Florida. Joseph was the son of a woman enslaved by Roi, named Perrine. There does not appear to be a record of why this gift was made; one hopes the reason was better than callous disregard for family ties.
