I represent Genoveva, a child of color born about 1780 in Pensacola. By the time of the 1820 Spanish census of Pensacola, I was a free woman living in the household of Jose Ortiz. I was 40 years old, and a Laundress. It is likely that Jose Ortiz and I were living as husband and wife (the Spanish did not have the same social taboos against this as the Anglo-Americans), and I may have used his surname. In British West Florida, my enslavement status was unknown.
