2nd Spanish period

The Second Spanish period began with the surrender the British garrison to the forces of Gen. Bernardo de Gálvez on May 10, 1781. All but a very few inhabitants were not sent to New York as prisoners of war. The Second Spanish period was a time of great cosmopolitan growth, and when West Florida became American in 1821, many Spanish settlers stayed.
