James Thompson

I represent James Thompson. I was a resident of Pensacola during the British period. I owned the trading sloop Adventure, and a couple of lots in town. I was born in Ireland in 1728 and came to New York as a merchant. I married Catherine Walton in 1753. We came to West Florida in November 1764. I traded in textiles, lumber, tobacco, liquor, deer hides, and New York beer. Governor George Johnstone appointed me to the West Florida council in July 1766. This council not only adivsed the governor, it sat as the Upper House of the provincial General Assembly. Before I left Pensacola for New York in 1767, I became the rental agent for a number of properties that had been granted to settlers who had subsequently left Pensacola and wanted to make money off their land. I returned to Pensacola in 1768, though how long I remained is not known.
