I represent Henry Pilott. I was a lieutenant of His Majesty’s 31st Regiment of Foot. Elizabeth Digby and I were married in Ireland in 1762. Our children were Jane, Catherine Mary, Elizabeth, and Judith Henrietta. Catherine Mary was an infant when we left Portsmouth, England, with the regiment for Pensacola. She contracted yellow fever and died soon after we arrived in 1765, at about one year of age; and I contracted the illness as well. My wife wrote a memoir that is one of the few sources of information we have about women’s lives in the colony of West Florida. While in Pensacola, I was promoted twice, to Adjutant and then to Fort Major and Barracks Master (meaning I was in charge of supplying and maintaining housing for the troops). Both Elizabeth’s memoir and my career trajectory indicate I was a well-respected officer and we lived comfortably. We returned to England in 1773; Elizabeth lived the rest of her life in England and Ireland and I joined her at the end of my military career. I died on March 22, 1819 at 79 years old.
