Sub-lt. Thomas Fitsmaurice

I represent Thomas Fitsmaurice. I was a sub-lieutenant in the Hibernian Regiment, one of three Irish regiments that formed the Irish Brigade of the Spanish Army. Irish soldiers had been serving in Spain for two hundred years by the time of the Revolutionary War, and it was a profitable arrangement for both the Irish-Catholic immigrants and the Spanish Crown. I was born about 1760 and entered the regiment as a cadet in 1776. I was wounded in combat on April 24, 1781 and died on May 8, 1781 – the last day of the siege of Pensacola.
