I represent Cornelio O’Kenny. I was a lieutenant in the Hibernian Regiment, one of three Irish regiments that formed the Irish Brigade of the Spanish Army. Irish soldiers had been serving in Spain for two hundred years by the time of the Revolutionary War, and it was a profitable arrangement for both the Irish-Catholic immigrants and the Spanish Crown. I was born in 1740 and entered the regiment as a cadety in 1763. General Gálvez sent me as a hostage to General Campbell during the negotiations of the terms of surrender of Pensacola.
