Lt. Col. William Stiell

I represent William Stiell. I was the Lt. Colonel and commander of the 3rd Battalion of His Majesty’s 60th (Royal American) Regiment of foot. I probably came with the Regiment when it returned to Pensacola in 1776. I appear in quite a bit of correspondence, reporting such things as the improving military-civilian relations, worsening trade relations between West Florida and New Orleans, the incomplete and inadequate nature of Pensacola’s defensive works, and the effects of a hurricane that devastated the Florida coast in 1778. I was appointed to the West Florida council in 1778. This council not only advised the governor, but sat as the Upper House of the provincial General Assembly. There would be only one more of those after my appointment, however, as Governor Chester did not convene the Assembly after the 7th one in 1778. I appear in the list of inhabitants of Pensacola for February 1780. It appears I may have left Pensacola on the last convoy that made it out to England in 1781, as the last return of the British garrison on May 10, 1781 shows a captain commanding the 60th.
