I represent Carlos Calfat. I was a second lieutenant (also called sub-lieutenant) of the Louisiana free black militias and served with the forces of General Bernardo de Gálvez. I was the son of Captain Simon Calfat. I was wounded at the January 1781 battle of The Village in Mobile, in which we fought against the Waldeckers and other provincial militias of the British, but I served in the Pensacola campaign a few months later. General Gálvez recommended me to the King of Spain for my meritorious service and he awarded me a distinctive medal of honor.
