James Miller

I represent James Miller. I was a private in His Majesty’s 31st Regiment of Foot, Captain Vignoles‘ company. The 31st was an infantry regiment that arrived in 1765 and – with a brief transfer to St. Augustine in 1769 – remained until 1772. I was married to Isabella Miller, and we had a daughter named Jane who was baptized – probably as an infant – on February 16, 1769. Isabella and an unnamed child were enumerated in the Return of Women & Children of the 31st Regiment in September 1768; the unnamed child might be Jane or it might be an older sibling. There is a James Miller, Sr. that served in the 31st as well. The fact that the “Sr.” was included may mean that he was my father, though that has not as yet been established by the available evidence.
