James Mant

I represent James Mant. I was a resident of the British colony of West Florida. I was the husband of Mary Mant and the father of two sons named James: The elder James was baptized on April 16, 1769 and drowned on September 8, 1770. The second child named James was baptized December 19, 1770. I had served as a Branch Pilot for some years, meaning I guided ships through the various tricky waterways of the harbor and rivers of West Florida, but I resigned in 1776. By 1776 I had a couple of land grants in the Mississippi Valley. One of the petitions said I had lived in the Province for 11 years; my household included one child and 9 enslaved people. There was no mention of my wife.
