Dr. Samuel Fontinelle

I represent Samuel Fontinelle (also seen as Fontenal). I was the Surgeon in the Royal Artillery. I arrived in Pensacola in 1764, when I and six assistants formed the entire medical staff of the province. I was there at least until February 1780, when I appear on a list of Pensacola residents. I was granted lot 13 in 1766, which I sold; it changed hands several times and ended up in the possession of William Panton in 1795. My wife was the aunt of Elias Walker Durnford, the eldest son of Lt. Gov. Elias Durnford. Surgeon in the royal artillery. I was an educated and accomplished man; I spoke several languages and read classical literature. In my old age, I “became a martyr from gout.”
