Surely the most overworked profession in the colony, the physicians and surgeons had their work cut out for them. The British suffered terribly from illness – dysentery, scurvy, smallpox outbreaks, and the ubiquitous Gulf Coast foe: yellow fever. Combat was a daily occurrence in the later years and throughout were the ordinary ailments of daily life.
