I represent Simon Calfat. I was identified as a free pardo, which was the Spanish term for a man of mixed race. I commanded the Louisiana free moreno and pardo militia companies during the Revolutionary War and into the 1780s. I served under General Bernardo de Gálvez in his Mississippi operation, at Mobile, and at the siege of Pensacola. One of my sons was killed and another wounded at Mobile; a third, Lt. Carlos Calfat, was wounded while accomplishing meritorious acts of service. I was presented with a 240-peso pension for the rest of my life for my service. New Orleans Diocesan records show I died in September 1786.
