Ens. John Primrose Thompson

Photo representing Ens. John Primrose Thompson

I represent John Primrose Thompson. I was an ensign in His Majesty’s 31st Regiment of Foot, commissioned in 1766. I was private secretary to Gov. George Johnstone. Governor Johnstone was, unfortunately, known for his jurisdictional squabbles with the military leadership of Pensacola. One night, denied entry to the garrison by Lt. Col. Ralph Walsh, he attempted to climb the stockade wall while I fended off the bayonets of the jeering redcoats with my sword. In February 1766, I was granted 500 acres of land on the southwest side of the Escambia River. When Governor Johnstone left the colony in 1766, I purchased his enslaved woman, Phyllis. I emancipated her the next year, before I left West Florida myself.
