I represent Mrs. Aspley. I was among the women was among the women enumerated in the Return of Women & Children of the 31st Regiment, Capt. Archibald Hamilton‘s Company, in Sept 1768. It was the practice of the British Army to allow their soldiers to bring wives and children to overseas assignments, usually because we had no other way to support ourselves than to accompany them. Though my husband was not named in the Return, according to the August 1768 muster roll of the 31st, it was Pvt. Richard Aspley. While children were counted in this Return, none were associated with me. Genealogical research reveals that my name was most likely Elizabeth Sutton, though not quite enough records have been found to verify this for certain. If I am Elizabeth, Richard and I were married in Staffordshire, England, in 1740.
