I represent the child of Mrs. Sherlock, enumerated with her in the Return of Women & Children, 31st Regiment of Foot, Maj.Bromley‘s Company, Sept 1768. The 31st was an infantry regiment that arrived in 1765 and – with a brief transfer to St. Augustine in 1769 – remained until 1772. The Return does not name my father, but according to the August 1768 muster roll for the 31st, it was Pvt. Robert (or perhaps Richard; the abbreviation is difficult to make out) Shurlock. He had apparently transferred from the 16th the previous February.
