I represent Thomas Kirton. I was a resident of Pensacola during the British colonial period; in fact, I appear on the last count of British inhabitants of the town made by the Spanish just after its surrender in May 1781. I was identified as the “gaoler,” which is the British spelling of “jailer.” For many years there were two jails in Pensacola: one for criminals and one for debtors. The jailer was responsible not just for the incarceration of prisoners, but for overseeing the upkeep of the jail.
