I represent Sgt. Major James Burton. I was attached to the garrison in Pensacola in the early years of the British colonial period. My name appears in the Carpenter brothers’ (merchants in Pensacola) 1767-68 ledger books as having purchased vinegar, soap, and molasses. Given those dates, I was probably with His Majesty’s 31st Regiment of Foot (which means I may have been the husband of Mrs. Burton), but I might also have been with the Royal Artillery.
