Rev. William Dawson

I represent Rev. William Dawson. I arrived in Pensacola in 1765, with the earliest settlers and troops. I was 22 years old at the time. I was the son of Rev. John Dawson, of Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire. I went to University College, Oxford, graduating at 18. If I kept any registers of baptisms, marriages, or burials, they have not been found. Soon after my arrival, I petitioned Governor George Johnstone for permission to move to South Carolina – my salary was enough to keep up with Pensacola’s high cost of living and a young family simply couldn’t get by. I took over St. John’s parish in Colleton, SC, and died there on January 19, 1767. It would be another two years before a minister was appointed to Pensacola.
