Pvt. Philipp Henrich Volcke

I reprsent Philipp Henrich Volke. I was a private in the 4th Company of the 3rd Waldeck Regiment; however, I served as Batman (personal servant) to Chaplain Philipp Waldeck. I was born in 1751 in Kohlgrund, Waldeck Province. My religion was Evangelical (which, in this context, means “Protestant”). The 3rd Waldeck Regiment was hired by the British from Waldeck Prince Frederick Karl Augustus to assist them in fighting the American rebels in the Revolutionary War. I sailed for North America with the regiment in 1776, and we stopped in Plymouth, England to switch to British transport ships. On July 7, 1776, while making the rounds of the transports at Plymouth with Chaplain Waldeck, I fell out of the boat! Luckily I was pulled out of the water by the English sailors. After two years of heavy action we were sent to Pensacola, along with the provincial loyalist forces of Maryland and Pennsylvania. I was invalided (meaning that, for whatever reason, I was declared physically unfit for service) back to Germany on April 25, 1781.
