Pvt. John Dewize

I represent John Dewize. I was a private in His Majesty’s 31st Regiment of Foot, Major Bromley‘s company. I was born about 1731 in Philadelphia. The 31st was an infantry regiment that arrived in 1765 and – with a brief transfer to St. Augustine in 1769 – remained until 1772. I had a wife who was enumerated as Mrs. Dewize in the Return of Women & Children of the 31st Regiment, but no children were enumerated with her. In 1784, with a bad shoulder, I was given a pension after 25 years of service in the military. I worked as a tailor.
