I represent John Forbes. I was a Midshipman aboard HMS Ferret. I served with George Gauld, surveyor, on the surveying schooner Charlotte (attached to the Ferret) during the spring and summer of 1766, and saw service aboard the Tartar as well. Gauld requested me in the winter of 1766 as I was “of great service .. He is a good Seaman, and a brisk, active, and careful person.” At the time I was in the sixth year of the seven that had to be served before I could be examined for my lieutenancy.
