I represent Matthew Arnold, a resident of Pensacola during the British period. In March 1776 I petitioned the West Florida Council for a grant of land north of Lake Pontchartrain, and I was identified in that petition as an “artificer,” or skilled craftsman, from New York. I was listed among the householders in Pensacola at the time the Spanish captured the city (May 10, 1781). I am identified on that list as a bricklayer.
