I represent Martha Ford. I was a resident of West Florida during the British period, and I was known to be the mistress of Gov. George Johnstone. We lived together openly and I had at least one child with him in Pensacola, and five illegitimate children altogether that he acknowledged: John, George Lindsay, James Primrose, Alexander Patrick, and Sophia. In 1765 I petitioned the Council to be granted Lot 3 on the western bayfront in Pensacola, on Mansfield Street between Cumberland and George Streets (now Zarragossa Street between Baylen and Palafox). It was a good lot; it fronted on the bay back then. I later acquired 10 acres on the eastern perimeter of town. In 1768 I was granted 500 acres on the east side of Perdido Bay. There is a story that “the wife of Gov. Johnstone” assisted Rebecca Durnford with her delivery in the hut within the fort at Mobile, but it was probably me as there was no “wife of Gov. Johnstone” in West Florida at that time. After we left West Florida in 1767, we returned to England before separating in 1787. When I died in 1830, I left a fortune to my heirs.
