Manuel Josephson

I represent Manuel Josephson. I was born in Germany, but came to New York as a young adult and became a merchant. During the French and Indian War I was a “sutler,” – a civilian merchant that sold various goods and sundries (think toiletries and tobacco) to soldiers traveling with the British Army. I married Rachel Judah in 1759. When the British got to New York in 1776, we went to Philadelphia where I opened a store. I went to Pensacola and stayed for about a year, living on the east side of the fort with a few other Jewish merchants. Later I rented the house owned by Sir John Lindsay.
