Maj. Gen. James Adolphus Oughton

I represent James Adolphus Oughton. I was a Major General and commander of the 31st Regiment. I replaced Lt. Gen. Henry Holmes who died in 1772, transferring from the colonelcy of the 55th Regiment. I was a favorite officer of King George III, and Dr. Samuel Johnson once said of me, “Sir Adolphus is a very extraordinary man; a man of boundless curiosity and unwearied diligence.” I died after the 31st transferred from Pensacola to Canada. There is a tablet to my memory in Westminster Abbey.
