Lt. Scroope Egerton

I represent Scroope Egerton. I was a lieutenant in His Majesty’s 31st Regiment of Foot, having been commissioned on August 15, 1764. The 31st was an infantry regiment stationed at the garrison of Pensacola. We arrived in 1765 and immediately suffered immense losses due to diseases like yellow fever and dysentery. I died on October 8, 1765. My cause of death is listed as “putrid fever,” which was a bit of a catch-all term for diseases characterized by fever and unsavory symptoms, like typhus, diphtheria, and gangrene. I probably still lie buried in an unmarked grave in Pensacola.
