Lt. Alexander MacLellan

I represent Alexander MacLellan. I was a lieutenant in His Majesty’s 34th Regiment of Foot in British West Florida. I served as Barracks Master for the garrison, meaning I was in charge of supplying and maintaining housing for the troops. That was a tall order in Pensacola, where we British arrived and found the military facilities left by the Spanish in deplorable condition. I was also Deputy Secretary for the Province – I certified a lot of land grants – and by virtue of that position I was on the first West Florida Council in the fall of 1766. The council not only advised the governor, it acted as the Upper House for the provincial General Assembly. I was apparently a favorite of Governor George Johnstone. In 1766, as the 31st Regiment was arriving and the 35th was leaving, I housed the officers’ wives until they could move into their residences. My house was described as “large and airy, close to the sea side, and open to the sea breeze, which in that country is absolutely necessary.”
