I represent James Aird, a carpenter from Ayreshire, Scotland. I was in Pensacola at least by January 1768, when I was granted lot 150 just to the east of the fort in Pensacola on Harcourt Street near Charlotte (now Intendencia near Alcaniz). I sold this lot fairly quickly. In 1775, I rented premises from William Aird (who may be a relative). I petitioned for a grant in 1776 on the Amite River, where I said I had been a resident of the colony for 11 years, with a wife, one apprentice, and 12 enslaved people. Eventually I settled a plantation named Orangefield on the north side of Pensacola Bay. I and William Aird did quite a bit of work for the town of Pensacola, installing a floor in the Market House and working on the town jail. I was on the list of people who lived in Pensacola at the time the Spanish captured the town on May 10, 1781.
