I represent Hugh Guthrie. I was the Purser to HMS Jamaica. A purser in the 18th century Royal Navy was in charge of ship’s supplies, like food, water, and other sundries used by the sailors at sea. While there would be a new sloop Jamaica commissioned in September 1778, (commanded by Lt. Robert Deans, who would later command HMS Mentor), I sailed on the older two-masted sloop built in 1744. This ship would founder and sink running between Jamaica and Pensacola in 1770, but I would not live to see that disaster: I died at Pensacola on December 18, 1769.
