I represent Francis Lewis. I was a resident of West Florida during the British period. In November 1777, I was engaged by the provincial council to form a horse patrol to scout for rebel attack (“rebels,” in this case, being American revolutionaries). I was given a grant of land in 1777 of 300 acres on the northwest side of the Escambia River at a place known as the “Spanish Old Field.” At that time, my household consisted of two children and five enslaved people, but there was no mention of a wife.
