Arthur Gordon

I represent Arthur Gordon. I was a resident of Pensacola during the British period. I had a background in the practice of law and in 1765 I was appointed Register for the Chancery Court (clerk of court). In 1767, I was elected to represent Pensacola in the House of Commons for the 2nd provincial General Assembly. I was elected speaker at that session when Edmund Rush Wegg was absent. I was apparently an enemy of Montforte Brown as when the 4th provincial General Assembly met in spring 1770, Brown was gleeful that I had fled the colony because of debts. He referred to me as one of “three indigent attorneys expelled from other provinces.” I went to East Florida, St. Augustine, and by 1772, I had become a provincial councilor and Attorney General.
