Capt. Richard Allen

I represent Richard Allen, Captain and company commander in the 35th Regiment of Foot during our time in West Florida. The regiment saw nearly continuous action from the beginning of the Seven Years’ War in 1756 until 1763, when it left for Pensacola. We remained until 1765, during which time we suffered many losses to disease. I was a lieutenant by 1758 at Halifax, commissioned a captain on October 6, 1760 and first appeared on a payroll as a company commander under Lt. Gen Charles Otway on November 18, 1760, while the regiment was in Quebec. In October 1761, I was on the rolls in Staten Island; on the payroll that ended June 24, 1765, when the regiment was at Pensacola Harbour, I was shown as heading home to England. I remained with the Regiment, being promoted to Major in 1769, and to Lieutenant colonel and commander of the regiment in 1772. The rolls show my resignation on March 5, 1775, while the regiment was in Cork, Ireland.
