Alexander McCullagh

I represent Alexander McCullagh (seen spelled a variety of ways in the records). I was a resident of West Florida during the British period. I served in a couple of roles in the colony: I was Provincial Indian Store keeper, which means I was in charge of housing the goods and supplies that were kept to gift to and trade with the local indigenous peoples. Later, in 1771, I became Provost Marshal of the province I was Deputy Provost Marshal for the Province (the provost marshal was the official in charge of security and law enforcement, sometimes in both the military and civilian realms). I was on the list of householders remaining in Pensacola at the time of the capitulation made by the Spanish in May 1781, still serving as Deputy Provost Marshal. I would probably have been made a prisoner of war with the rest of the survivors of the siege and sent to New York on parole.
