I represent Ludwig Wilhelm Lincker. I was a private in the 3rd Company, 3rd Waldeck Regiment. I was born in 1754 in Affersleben, Prussia. I was Evangelical (which means “Protestant” in this context), and I stood 5′ 2″ tall – only a little below average for the men in my regiment. I was an apothecary by trade. The 3rd Waldeck Regiment was hired by the British from Waldeck Prince Frederick Karl Augustus to assist them in fighting the American rebels in the Revolutionary War. The Regiment reached North America in 1776. After two years of heavy action the regiment was sent to Pensacola, along with the provincial loyalist forces of Maryland and Pennsylvania. The town capitulated to the Spanish on May 10, 1781, and on May 15 – between the surrender and the boarding of Spanish ships to be sent to New York under parole – I deserted at Pensacola. I may have gone over to the Spanish army, but the records do not say. (Don’t think too poorly of me; desertion was rampant in West Florida. Everyone was having a hard time and we all thought the grass was greener on the other side.)
